How to Release Lingering Emotional Energy | The Mindful Energy Shift
When the Thought Changes but the Feeling Stays: How to Release Lingering Emotional Energy
Have you ever changed your thinking about something…but noticed that the feeling didn’t change with it? If you’ve experienced this, you may have wondered how to release lingering emotional energy when your thoughts have already moved on.
Maybe something happened earlier in the day.
A conversation bothered you.
Plans changed unexpectedly.
Someone’s words got under your skin.
You received news that created worry or uncertainty.
At first, you began to react and then you caught yourself.
You took a breath.
You stepped back from the situation and changed your perspective.
Perhaps you reminded yourself:
Everything is going to be okay.
I don’t need to carry this.
I’m choosing to let this go.
And you meant it.
Mentally, you were ready to move forward.
Then an hour later…there it was again.
The tightness.
The heaviness.
The nervous feeling in your stomach.
The tension in your shoulders.
Or maybe just that uncomfortable energy you couldn’t quite describe.
Your thoughts had changed.
The situation had passed.
So why were you still feeling it?
How to Release Lingering Emotional Energy When Your Mind Has Already Moved On
Mindfulness teaches us to become aware of our thoughts and reactions rather than automatically acting upon them.
Something happens.
We notice.
We breathe.
We pause.
And instead of reacting automatically, we give ourselves an opportunity to choose how we want to respond.
That mindful pause can be incredibly powerful.
Then…sometimes there is another part of the experience that happens after the pause.
You’ve already taken the breath.
You’ve already changed the thought.
You may have even responded to the situation calmly and thoughtfully.
And yet some of the emotional feeling seems to remain.
I like to think of this as lingering emotional energy.
This doesn’t necessarily mean you haven’t successfully changed your thinking or that you need to figure something else out.
Sometimes a feeling simply needs a little more attention before we’re ready to move forward.
The Temptation to Think About the Feeling
When an uncomfortable feeling remains, many of us instinctively return to our thoughts.
Why am I still feeling this?
What’s wrong?
I thought I let this go.
And then we may replay what happened.
We remember what someone said.
We imagine what we should have said.
We revisit what could have happened differently.
Before long, we are not only experiencing the original feeling anymore.
We’re creating new thoughts around the feeling.
Those thoughts may then create more emotion…
which creates more thoughts…
which creates more emotion.
The very thing we’re trying to release receives another round of our attention and energy.
There are certainly times when reflection is valuable. An emotion may contain information we need to understand, and some experiences deserve more time, support, or processing.
There are also moments when we already understand what happened.
We’ve already chosen a healthier perspective.
We’re ready to move forward … mentally …and yet…
We just don’t quite feel like we’ve moved forward.
In those moments, perhaps we don’t need another method to deal with the energy of the thoughts.
Perhaps we need another way of responding to what we’re feeling.
Introducing the Mindful Energy Shift
I created a simple practice for these moments called:
The Mindful Energy Shift
A Simple Practice for Shifting How You Feel
The idea behind it is simple.
Instead of continuing to analyze the feeling, fight against it or tell yourself you shouldn’t be feeling it, …you begin by acknowledging what is present.
You notice it.
You allow yourself to experience it without judgment.
And then, using awareness, breath, intention, visualization, and grounding, you begin inviting that energy to shift.
The intention isn’t: I have to get rid of this feeling.
Instead, it becomes: I can acknowledge what I’m feeling without continuing to carry it.
That is a very different relationship with an uncomfortable emotion.
Let’s Not Fight What You Feel…Let’s Shift it
Sometimes when we talk about shifting emotional energy, it can sound as though we’re supposed to replace every uncomfortable feeling with a positive one.
That’s not what this practice is about.
Sadness doesn’t need to become happiness immediately.
Frustration doesn’t make you less mindful.
Worry doesn’t mean you’ve failed to think positively.
And difficult experiences shouldn’t simply be covered over with positive thoughts.
Our emotions are part of being human.
The Mindful Energy Shift begins with acknowledgment rather than resistance.
This is what I’m feeling right now.
And then:
Is this something I still need to carry?
Sometimes the answer may be yes.
There may be something that needs your attention.
But sometimes you may realize:
No. The moment has passed. I’m ready to release this.
That’s where the shift can begin.
A Simple Way to Begin
The next time you notice an uncomfortable feeling lingering after you’ve already changed your perspective, try something different before returning to the story in your mind.
Pause for a moment.
Notice what you’re feeling.
Where do you experience it in your body?
Your chest?
Your stomach?
Your shoulders?
Your throat?
Perhaps there isn’t a specific location. That’s okay too.
Simply acknowledge:
This is what I’m feeling right now.
Then give this feeling a shape…Ask yourself, if this feeling had a shape what shape would it be? Allow the first answer to be the correct one.
Then give this feeling a color…same question…if this feeling had a color what color would it be? Allow the first answer to be the correct one.
Then take a comfortable breath and imagine creating a little space around the feeling.
Rather than trying to push it away, allow yourself to consider:
I don’t have to carry this simply because it’s still here.
Now choose how you would rather feel.
Calm.
Peaceful.
Grounded.
Confident.
Safe.
Free.
Imagine a scene where you have felt the desired feeling the strongest…perhaps a hug from a loved one…being present in the woods or beach…or just imagine the feeling strongly…however you want to bring in this desired feeling is perfect for you…
Imagine what that feeling might be like within your body.
Not just the words of the feeling…the experience of feeling.
Then ask yourself the same questions for the desired feelings you asked regarding the undesired feeling…
Where in the body do I feel the desired feeling?
If this feeling had a shape what shape would it be? Allow the first answer to be the correct one.
If this feeling had a color what shape would it be? Allow the first answer to be the correct one.
Then allow yourself to imagine releasing what you no longer need and welcoming the emotional energy you choose to carry forward.
Allow the calm, confident energy you just created to transform, push out and replace the unwanted energy.
Perhaps you imagine the desired feeling to change the undesired feeling shape or color or both..
Watch or feel the transformation of energy from the undesired to the desired happen…
When the transformation is complete…bring your awareness into your body and your surroundings.
Feel your feet beneath you.
Notice the present moment.
Ground yourself in now.
The event happened then.
You are here now.

I’ve created a simple handout you can save and return to whenever you notice yourself carrying emotional energy that you’re ready to release.
The Mindful Energy Shift: A Simple Practice for Shifting How You Feel
Use it after a stressful conversation, a difficult day, an unexpected change, or simply when you notice that something from earlier is still following you around emotionally.

You don’t have to memorize the process.
Let the handout remind you:
Notice… Acknowledge…Shift… Choose… Ground.
Want to Experience the Mindful Energy Shift?
Sometimes a mindfulness practice makes more sense when you experience it rather than simply read about it.
That’s why I created a companion episode of the Empowering Mindful Moments Podcast.
In the episode, we’ll talk briefly about why a feeling can seem to linger even after you’ve changed your thinking.
Then I’ll guide you through the Mindful Energy Shift step by step.
You’ll have time to notice what you’re feeling…
connect with where you experience it…
allow the energy to begin shifting…You choose what you’d rather carry forward…
and then ground yourself into the present moment.

I’ve already dealt with this. Why am I still feeling it?
You Choose What You Carry Forward
We cannot always choose what happens around us.
We can’t control every conversation, every change of plans, every disappointment, or every difficult moment.
But mindfulness reminds us that we can become more intentional about what happens within us afterward.
Sometimes responding instead of reacting happens in the moment.
And sometimes…it happens an hour later.
The situation is over.
The thought has changed and you still notice you’re carrying something from it.
That’s another opportunity to respond..
To recognize:The moment has passed.
I can release what I no longer need.
I can choose what I carry forward.
And perhaps that’s one more way we learn to live a mindful way of life.
A Mindful Blessing
May you gently release
what no longer needs to travel with you.
May the energy of yesterday
find its way back into peace.
May you make room
for calm, clarity, and possibility.
And as you step into each new moment,
may you remember—
you get to choose what you carry forward.
