Have you ever tried to change a behavior, belief, or habit—or perhaps tried to overcome a fear—only to find that no matter how much effort or willpower you apply, the old patterns persist? If so, you’re not alone. There’s a simple explanation for this: the difference between your conscious and subconscious mind, and how they influence thoughts, habits, and change.
Curious about why hypnosis might be the answer? Let’s dive in.
Understanding the Conscious and Subconscious Mind
Your thoughts and willpower originate in your conscious mind, which makes up just 10% of your brain power. It’s the tip of the iceberg. The other 90%, the much larger and more powerful part of your mind, is your subconscious mind, where habits, beliefs, and behaviors are stored.
Now, you can begin to see why willpower alone often falls short. While it’s a great starting point, your conscious mind simply doesn’t have the strength to override the deeply ingrained patterns in your subconscious. But here’s the good news: the subconscious can be changed—quickly and effectively—with the right approach.
How Does Hypnosis Work?
Let’s talk about those habits, beliefs, behaviors, and fears. They are like eight-lane highways in your subconscious mind—strong neural pathways formed over years of repetition and reinforcement. But these highways aren’t permanent. They can be rerouted using what I call Power Language—specific language that speaks directly to the subconscious.
And how do we deliver this Power Language? Through hypnosis
In a hypnotic trance, which is just a state of relaxation, your conscious mind takes a much-needed break. It enters a sort of “pause mode,” no longer actively thinking or analyzing. This creates a perfect window for the hypnotherapist to introduce suggestions—Power Language—that encourage your subconscious to replace old habits, beliefs, and fears with new, empowering ones.
What Is Power Language?
Power Language is the natural communication of the subconscious mind, rooted in imagination and emotion. By vividly imagining yourself living the new change you desire and pairing that image with strong, positive emotions, you signal your subconscious to begin accepting and building the new behavior or belief.
This process is like tending a garden. As you consistently focus on and nurture the desired change, while letting go of the old, unwanted behavior, the new pattern grows stronger and more established. Over time, it becomes the dominant pathway in your mind—like a well-paved eight-lane highway—while the old pattern gradually fades away, becoming a distant memory.
What Happens During a Hypnosis Session?
Here’s a common misconception: hypnosis is not mind control. You remain fully aware during the session. The suggestions used are not imposed on you; they come from you.
Before the session, we’ll discuss the change you want to make. I’ll ask questions like:
What does the change look like?
How will it feel?
How will your life improve with this change?
The answers to these questions become the foundation of the suggestions used during your session. Hypnosis is a collaboration, and you are always in control.
Ready to Transform Your Life?
Now that you understand how the conscious and subconscious minds work, and how hypnosis can help you make lasting changes, ask yourself:
Are you ready to break free from old habits and limiting beliefs?

In today’s fast-paced world, stress and anxiety have become unwelcome sleep partners in many bedrooms. This has led to sleepless nights and poor health. However, there’s a powerful tool that is helping many to sleep more soundly and that is mindful self-hypnosis. This blend of mindfulness and self-hypnosis offers a natural and easy solution for those struggling to quiet their overactive minds and experience better sleep. In this blog, we’ll explore how you can conquer sleepless nights with mindful self-hypnosis. Before we go any further, let me plug my upcoming class that is designed to help you quiet the mind and sleep fully….
Check out my new class: Mindfulness: From Anxious to Restful – The Ultimate Sleep Class Wednesday Sept. 11, 6pm – 8pm, Centennial Park
Mindful self-hypnosis combines two well-established practices: mindfulness and self-hypnosis. Mindfulness involves bringing your attention to the present moment. This helps you break free from the cycle of anxious thoughts that often disrupt sleep. Self-hypnosis, on the other hand, is a state of focused relaxation. This focused relaxation allows you to calm your daily stress and deepen your relaxation. When combined, these practices create a powerful synergy that can help quiet your mind and prepare your body for restful sleep. There is research backing this up.
Sounds Wonderful: Where is the Research?
Glad you asked: Research has shown that mindfulness is highly effective in reducing insomnia symptoms and improving sleep quality. Studies published in “JAMA Internal Medicine” have shown that mindfulness meditation can greatly improve sleep in people with moderate sleep problems. The practice helps to decrease overactive mind, and the negative thoughts that keep us alert and awake. There’s more….
Similarly, self-hypnosis has been proven to be a valuable tool for sleep improvement. According to research in the “International Journal of Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis”: Individuals who practice self-hypnosis tend to fall asleep faster and enjoy higher sleep satisfaction. This is because self-hypnosis helps to reduce stress and anxiety, which is known to disrupt sound sleep. Research shows mindfulness and self-hypnosis are powerful tools for sleep. How do they work together?
How Mindful Self-Hypnosis Works
Mindful self-hypnosis typically begins with mindful breathing, which helps to anchor your attention in the present moment. This practice alone can be incredibly effective in quieting the mind and preparing for sleep. As you become more relaxed, you can then use self-hypnosis techniques to enter a deeper state of relaxation. This is where you can address any underlying stress or anxiety. By doing so, you can reframe, release and set aside your anxious thoughts. Also, this practice trains your mind to a bedtime routine with relaxation and peace, rather than stress and worry.
The beauty of mindful self-hypnosis is that it empowers you to take control of your thoughts. With regular practice, you’ll find that it’s easy to quiet your mind, let go of anxious thoughts, and drift into a peaceful sleep. Let’s practice mindful self-hypnosis, shall we?
How is it Done Exactly?
While there is no one way, here is my practice. Use my style until your own style takes form
Begin with mindful breathing meditation. This is just as easy as becoming aware of your own breathing. When your mind drifts off, just bring it back to the awareness of your breathing….noticing, what you notice.
Some nights this could be enough to fall asleep
Once mindful breathing has relaxed your thoughts down, however, they are still there…release self-hypnosis..
Begin to bring your awareness to the anxious thought, scenario, condition, problem, etc. Ask yourself, what is it that worries you the most? Could it wait till morning? What is the worst case scenario? How likely is that to happen? Once those questions have been answered… really it is just facing the fear. Once fear is faced it often loses its bite. You are most likely already feeling more relaxed and at ease.
Ask yourself this question: What would you like to see happen, instead? Play that in your mind and while playing what you want to happen, what emotion would you feel if that happened right now? Let that play out and allow that to be your peaceful comforting thought as you drift to sleep.
Remember: There is no ‘ONE’ way. So please take these steps and make them your own: Adapting them to your own style.
Why You Should Try Mindful Self-Hypnosis
If you’re someone who wants to unlock better sleep and a calmer mind, mindful self-hypnosis could be your key, By incorporating mindfulness and self-hypnosis into your bedtime routine, you’ll create a powerful toolset that you can use to combat stress and promote restful sleep.
Conclusion
In a world where stress and anxiety are all too common, mindful self-hypnosis offers a path to peace and tranquility. So why not give it a try? With a little practice, you may find that better sleep and a calmer mind are just a few breaths away. Embrace the power of mindful self-hypnosis and discover a calmer, more peaceful you.
